When you think of The Wharf Mooloolaba – what’s the first thing that springs to mind?
Perhaps you are taken back to that first moment you spotted a whale breaching off the back of Whale One? That first bite into a stacked, mouthwatering burger provided by our friends at Ninth Street? Or was it soaking up the last few hours of sunshine while sipping on a locally-sourced cocktail and listening to sweet sounds of live music aboard Saltwater Eco Tours Sunset Tours?
As The Wharf Mooloolaba continues to grow, evolve, and warmly welcome new teams and experiences to our precinct, there remains one attraction that has continually offered an iconic Sunshine Coast ‘must do’. It’s the memorable, family-friendly experience aboard Mooloolaba Canal Cruise’s timber ferry, the historic M.V Mudjimba.
And… she’s recently had a glow up – adding a modern luxe feel to a much-loved piece of Mooloolaba history.
About – Brief History of the Vessel
The MV Mudjimba was built in 1963 and was originally called the ‘John McMaster’. This historic timber boat began its working life as a Brisbane Cross River Ferry, operating from the suburb of Hamilton to the Apollo Street Wharf in Bulimba.
Built of oat planking on the hull and a bunya pine above the waterline for flexibility – it is now used by Mooloolaba Canal Cruises, transformed into an iconic cruise vessel operating out of The Wharf Mooloolaba since 1990!
Its name is inspired by the nearby Mudjimba Island, located just off the Sunshine Coast near Marcoola. For Indigenous locals, Mudjimba Island is also known as ‘Old Woman Island’, relating to two First Nation Dreamtime stories about the Island and its creation.
Revamp Details
The team recently finished a full refurbishment of Mudjimba’s interiors, with nautical-themed carpet, upholstery and a new navy blue and white paint job.
The vessel now also proudly boasts an onboard Bar, featuring a range of international and locally sourced beers, wines and spirits. The new bar has truly elevated the experience onboard to be one of leisure, luxury and entertainment.
What was once a quaint vessel for family-friendly scenic tours has now transformed into a highly photogenic event space; suited for private events, stand-up comedy cruises, paint-and-sip nights featuring local artists, and, of course, their renowned daily sunset cruises.
It’s fair to say that this revamp is fit for the Queen of our Harbour and surrounding waters, and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s yet to come for this vessel and the team at Mooloolaba Canal Cruises.
